Description

Quixin ophthalmic solution's key component is Levofloxacin – a 3-rd generation Fluoroquinolone antibiotic (or Quinolones) with a wide range activity.

Indications:

- bacterial ocular infections, including conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer caused by susceptible bacteria among others.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Levofloxacin enters bacterial cells and interferes with their DNA. It destroys the DNA and does not allow the bacteria and protozoa to form new genetic material. This ultimately results in death of microorganisms, which gets rid of the infection. Levofloxacin has been shown to be active against gram-positive bacteria (Corynebacterium species, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Viridans group streptococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae), gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens).

Dosage

Days 1-2: instill one to two drops in the treated eye(s) every 2 hours. Use a maximum of 8 times per day.

Days 3-5: instill one to two drops in the treated eye(s). Use a maximum of 4 times per day.

Precautions:

Levofloxacin solution is not for injection.

Levofloxacin solution is associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using drops immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.

Prolonged use of Quixin ophthalmic solution may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, discontinue using these drops and institute alternative therapy.

Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with eye, fingers or another source.

Quixin ophthalmic solution contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride, which may cause eye irritation.

Quixin eye drops may cause your vision to blur temporarily after you have applied them into your eye. Do not drive or operate machinery until this has worn off.

Patients should not wear contact lenses while using Levofloxacin solution for eye infection.

Wash your hands before using the eye drops.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should instill it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately. A topical overdose of Quixin ophthalmic solution may be flushed from the eye(s) with lukewarm tap water.

Storage

Store at cool room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Use within one month after opening a container. Keep out of the reach of children.

Side effects

The most common side effects associated with Quixin ophthalmic solution are:

  • burning sensation in the eye
  • blurred vision
  • stickiness in the eye

Side effects occurrence does not only depend on the medication you are taking, but also on your overall health and other factors.
